Mountain Climbing in and around Moab, Utah.  People from around the world come to the area around Moab, Utah to go mountain climbing. The desert rocks, canyons, and mountains are wonderful places to climb, and just about every age and skill level should be able to find a place to climb and have a great time.

Visitors to the Moab area can choose from a variety of different places to climb, such as Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park. You will also find a number of other parks in the area with areas to climb, but you should be aware that some of them require permits to use the land. Always check at a visitor's center to inquire about what permits you might need for climbing.

The following are some of the most popular areas for people to go rock climbing around Moab. Each has something different to offer the climber.

Castle Valley, which is located northeast of the city of Moab, is known for beautiful rock towers and sandstone buttresses. Castleton Tower (called Castle Rock as well) is a very popular destination for climbers. Also in Castle Valley are the popular Convent, Rectory, and Parriot climbing routes.

Also located northeast of Moab are the Big Bend Boulders and the spires of Fisher Towers.

To the southwest is the 500-foot Wall Street, which has a variety of different kinds of routes depending on the climbing experience you want. You will find plenty of slab, crack, and face routes.

Indian Creek, known for its excellent crack climbing, is located south of Moab. If your favorite type of rock adventure is crack climbing, you have to check out Indian Creek.

When deciding on a place to climb, especially if it is your first time in the area or you are an amateur climber, you may want to think about hiring professional guides. A good guide can take you to some of the best places in the desert, and they can make sure that you and your family stays completely safe the entire time. If you have no desert experience – even if you have climbed in other areas – a guide who knows the hazards of the desert might be a good idea.

You can even find tours that will take you on multi-day camping and climbing trips. You won't find a better way to get to know the rocks of Moab. However you choose to climb, with a guide or just among friends and family, have fun and stay safe.
